For real?! What counts as public service?
non-profit, teaching, government. this actually already exists, though in a very restricted manner. You have to work 10 years in public service, with no gaps of more than a year (i think) of employment to qualify. also serving in the peace corps or americorps gets a big chunk of student debt written off.

Work study jobs kick ass. I had a great one at my first school. It was the one thing that kept me sane by getting me off campus. Of course, I was doing work that they should have been paying me $17 an hour to do, and not $6, but you know, that’s how it goes.
